B I O G R A P H Y
J. Jefrey Matthews
A long-time Tucson, Arizona resident who’s been either a regular visitor or part-time resident of San Carlos, Sonora for decades, I successfully negotiated my first commercial real estate deal before I was twenty-one.
Originally from the Mid-West, I return to my home town of Delaware, Ohio every September for the annual running of harness horse racing’s famous pace, “The Little Brown Jug”. A graduate of Tucson’s highly regarded, former prep school, Southern Arizona School, I received a B.A. degree in Economics from Claremont McKenna College in California and attended the University of Arizona Law School, Arizona State University and Harvard University.
Although I have had a Real Estate Broker’s license for more than 30 years, I did not become fully active in the real estate business until after I successfully negotiated the sale of my family business – Matthews Chevrolet and Matthews Rolls Royce – in 1984. I have also owned and operated my own securities broker/dealer firm (approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission – the SEC) and have been a member of the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. (NASD). Named the #1 agent at Long Realty in Arizona for dollar sales volume in 1991, past real estate involvements include resort properties, apartment projects, shopping centers and commercial/industrial development work.
Among my civic/community interests, I have been a member of The Rotary Club of Tucson and The Mountain Oyster Club. Over the years, I have served on a number of Boards of Directors and Committees – including Southern Arizona School and Valley School for Girls, The Tucson Museum of Art, 88-CRIME, the Tucson and Nogales Chambers of Commerce, the Empire Ranch Foundation and Make-A-Wish Foundation of Arizona.
